Fast-rising Kenyan rapper Groovy Jo has released a new EP titled A Groovy Affair. The EP marks a triumphant return to her Hip-Hop roots. Prior to the EP’s release, she linked up with Aurie on the albums lead single “On My Own.”

On her last EP Pressure, the “No Attitude” hitmaker explored softer R&B and Afro-pop sounds.

Conversely, A Groovy Affair showcases a diverse range of sound, from the summer-inspired “Neck Chain” to gritty the hip-hop cut “I’m Back” and more.

Produced by: K6, Lemario, Dope-I-Mean, and (Grammy-Award winning) D.O. Speaks.

Mixed and mastered by: Asum Garvey

Groovy Jo’s Bold Return: Song Breakdown

A Groovy Affair highlights Groovy Jo’s versatility and love for exploring different genres. On what inspired the album title, she had this to say,

With this EP, I’m going back to the hard-hitting raps, still pushing for female empowerment using provocative and raunchy lyrics in true Groovy Jo fashion. I’m also paying homage to a few of my idols, hence the title ‘A Groovy Affair.’

Groovy Jo introduces the EP with “I’m Back,” a witty comeback statement with hard-hitting rhymes, followed by “Majirani.” On the song, she calls out fake industry players and talks about upholding her values.

On the third track, she links up with Fena Gitu on “64 Bars,” a playful bar-for-bar trade-off, paying homage to rappers who came before her. She also encourages listeners to always stand for what they believe in and remember their roots.

In “Joy Kendi,” a trap-infused bop, she pays homage to Kenyan content creator and actress Joy Kendi.

On “Attention,” Jo talks about discouraging comments on wax with rising South African rapper Buzzi Lee. “Neck Chain” empowers women, and she closes the EP with “To My Friends” which celebrates support from friends.

Personal Fulfillment and Future Projects

I have loved every step of the way while making this tape,” said Groovy Jo. “While there were challenging times, the team I worked with supported me all through. Making and releasing music is overwhelming, but I’m quite fulfilled with this tape and I hope the audience can feel that through the music.

The EP covers a range of emotions, with Groovy Jo asserting her hip-hop prowess. She further delves into themes of love, heartbreak, and the joy of pursuing passions despite challenges.

Each track is evidence to her ability to blend hard beats with introspective lyrics, creating a dynamic listening experience.

Groovy Jo continues to empower women through her music and amplify voices that have been silenced by oppressive and broken systems.
