Remembering Musa Juma: 14 Years On, His Legacy Lives
Today (March 15, 2025) marks 14 years since the demise of legendary Rhumba, Ohangla, and Benga maestro, Musa Juma Mumbo.
Fondly known as MJ or Wuod Usonga (Son of Alego Usonga), he breathed his last in a Mombasa hospital, where he was receiving treatment. If he were alive today, he would be turning 57 later this year.
Though MJ departed over a decade ago, his music remains timeless, a testament to his unique approach to the craft. He was not only an exceptional singer and songwriter, but also a gifted guitarist whose mastery of the instrument set him apart.
His notable hits include “Hera Mudho,” “Hera Mwandu,” “Freddy Afune,” “Siaya Kababa,” “Vicky,” “Betty,” “Aggrey,” “Oyoo Daktari,” “Clarkson,” “Christina,” “Auma,” “Osiepe,” “Saida,” and “Maselina,” among many others. Listening to his songs today underscores the immense void his death left in the local entertainment industry.
For those who cherish his music, Musa Juma was more than an artist—he was a cultural icon. Through his songs, he promoted Luo traditions, spoke against societal vices, and imparted valuable life lessons. His music covered themes of love, family, tragedy, and friendship, which explains why many of his songs bear the names of specific individuals.

While a lot of Luo Benga and Rhumba artists have emerged over the years, none have matched Musa Juma’s brilliance. He set the bar incredibly high, one that no successor has reached. Many musicians have tried to emulate his sound and songwriting style, yet true class remains irreplaceable.

Musa Juma discography
Even after returning from a seven-month tour in the U.S, despite looking frail and unwell, he was determined to honor his scheduled performances in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa. Unfortunately, he passed away barely a day after performing in Mombasa.
MJ’s journey to success was not easy one. He began his music career in 1990 alongside his brother, Omondi Tonny, when they formed the Limpopo Band. Initially, they performed in small, obscure clubs with little impact. However, their perseverance paid off, and by the early 2000s, their music had gained widespread recognition.
2. Originality
While Musa Juma was influenced by legendary artists like Ochieng Kabaselleh, Okatch Biggy, and Collela Mazee, he never sought to imitate them. Instead, he carved out his own identity, blending the best elements of his predecessors with his unique style. His originality set him apart, making his music distinct and memorable.

3. Humility and Integrity
Musa Juma was known for his humility. If you walked into a room where he was rehearsing with his band, Orch Limpopo International, you wouldn’t easily pick him out—he was never showy, proud, or loud. He remained a simple man despite his success.
In his music, he often discouraged men from flaunting their wealth to impress women, emphasizing humility and authenticity. Moreover, MJ rarely accepted handouts from fans, further proving his self-reliance and integrity.

4. Dedication to Family and Friends
Beyond his passion for music, Musa Juma was deeply devoted to his wife Winnie and daughter Victoria, often speaking about them in interviews. He also cherished his friends, particularly those who supported him during his early struggles.
Unlike many artists who distance themselves from their roots after achieving fame, MJ remained loyal to those who had helped him along the way. He celebrated his friends in his songs and turned to them during difficult times.
A Legacy That Lives On
Fourteen years after his passing, his influence on the music industry is unparalleled. His music continues to inspire and entertain, proving that true artistry transcends time.
While many have tried to replicate his style, none have successfully filled the void he left behind.
For emerging artists, Musa Juma’s life and career offer valuable lessons in hard work, originality, humility, and dedication. His story is a stark reminder that greatness is not just about talent—it is also about perseverance, character, and an unwavering commitment to one’s craft.
