Multi-talented Kenyan-American artist Vallerie Muthoni, also known as Brown Suga, has released a new track titled “Shake.” She features Lilmaina and Kahvinya on this dance anthem, just in time for the December holidays.

The track blends elements of hip-hop, riddim, dancehall, and gengetone and showcases Lilmaina’s swagger alongside rising Kenyan pop star Kahvinya.

“Shake” is an energetic and danceable song with a catchy chorus, typical of many gengetone hits. The track invites you to have fun at the barbershop, at home, or on your way to a favourite hang-out spot. Vallerie Muthoni said:

It is a winning recipe of an infectious hook, fire verses, and melodies, and that beat

A Genre-Blending Anthem to Let Loose and Have Fun

Vallerie Muthoni believes that different music genres are connected and rich in this project. She is confident that “Shake” could become the next big hit in gengetone.

“This track is the perfect anthem to put on blast when you just wanna move your body and have a great time,” she shared.

“It reminds the listener that it doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, and what you do. In this moment of time you can  be present and absolutely let loose however you choose,” she added.

The Story Behind “Shake”

Vallerie Muthoni’s new song has roots in 2020 when Gengetone was popping. She released the track this year because it felt right.

She received the beats from producers Pesos and Dencho, who co-produced her recent EP, Vision 2020, along with Awe Killer. This EP reflects her life and voice in a changing world after COVID-19.

In a statement, she explained, “The song existed in the archives for the past two years but I felt this was the year we needed to share it with the world.”

Vallerie’s Early Beginnings to Now

Vallerie began her music career in early 2017 when she released her first single with her former schoolmate and friend, Mbithi. She quickly gained popularity as a new female MC who also sang and rapped.

At just 17, she was named one of Homeboyz’s Jumpoff Freshman Class of 2018 and the only female artist that year.

She then released two EPs in consecutive years: The Wavey Soul (2018) and Pisces SZN (2019). These projects showed her ability to blend genres and switch between rap and melodies.

After some time, Vallerie Muthoni returned with Vision 2020.

With “Shake” now on the airwaves, Muthoni will continue her Vision 2020 tour across Africa and the world, create more videos for the EP, and work with talented artists in Africa.

“Shake” is available on all Digital Streaming Platforms.
